Bilbo has departed the Shire, leaving the One Ring to the care of his nephew Frodo, who knows nothing about it, other than it was “uncle Bilbo’s magic ring”. In the candlelight of Bag End (Bilbo’s house, also inherited to Frodo), Gandalf recounts the history of the ring, primarily focused on the creature Gollum.
